What is an e-cigarette?

Commonly known by other names such as an e-cig or vape pen, an e-cigarette is a re-usable electronic device that uses battery power to heat a flavoured liquid that creates a vapor which is puffed on by users via a mouthpiece.

E-cigarettes are typically shaped like a traditional cigarette, except slightly thicker due to the added electronics. Sometimes the heating mechanism is activated by your sucking on the mouthpiece (automatic) or via a button that you press in (manual) and there is usually a small LED that lights up while the heating element is active.

What’s the difference between an e-cigarette and a vape?

An e-cigarette is a small, uncomplicated device that resembles the look and function of a traditional tobacco cigarette. A vape, also known as an APV (advanced personal vaporiser) or mod, is a larger unit with a small computer built inside them that users can utilise to make fine adjustments to their vaping.

Is an e-cigarette healthy?

Because of Governmental regulation, we are forbidden from giving you a conclusive answer about the health effects of using an e-cigarette. You shouldn’t get an e-cigarette for any other reason than you want to enjoy a new hobby and see what the flavours are like.

Can you quit smoking with an e-cigarette?

Because an e-cigarette mimics the habitual smoking ‘experience’, many people have made the claim that they have been able to use them to cut down or quit their dependency on traditional tobacco cigarettes. However, there is no guarantee that you will be able to quit or cut down on smoking traditional cigarettes with an e-cigarette and therefore you should not purchase one with this intention in mind.

You should only invest in an e-cigarette because you want to try a new hobby and experiment with the many flavours available. Please note that none of the products we carry are smoking cessation devices.

Where can I use an e-cigarette?

While it would be really great to be able to use your e-cigarette anywhere, anytime – vaping devices are treated the same way as normal smoking with traditional cigarettes. Because of this, you are not permitted to use your e-cigarette inside most private businesses, public transport and other areas protected by the Smoke Free Environment Act (2000).

You can still use your e-cigarette in the comfort of your own home at your convenience since it’s your house, your rules. Depending on where you are, you should be mindful of how others feel about vaping and whether or not you should do it in front of them (for example: a mother may not be comfortable with you vaping around their child).

What e-juice should I start with?

If you have smoked traditional cigarettes and enjoy the flavour of tobacco, then a tobacco-flavoured e-juice is a logical place to start if you’re unsure if you’re going to enjoy vaping. This will give you a comparable taste sensation to a tobacco cigarette, except of course without the nicotine content found in tailored cigarettes.

If you’re someone who never smoked traditional cigarettes or doesn’t like/want to use tobacco flavours, there’s no shortage of delicious and interesting alternatives out there. In fact, the tobacco flavours are where most seasoned vapers end up – they usually move on to something more exotic.

If there’s a taste that exists, there’s probably an e-juice for it. Fruit, vegetable, dessert and even meat flavours are available for you to experiment with, so you will undoubtedly land on a selection you enjoy.

One thing that makes e-cigarettes and vaping such a great hobby is that there’s always something new to try. This keeps things from getting boring and gives you something to look forward to.

If you’re still unsure about where to get started when it comes to e-juices, there’s no shortage of information online you can access for advice. Luckily, vaping is a pretty big community and there’s lots of helpful opinions out there.

How long does an e-juice bottle last?

A normal 10ml bottle of e-juice will last around a few days to a week depending on the frequency at which your use your e-cigarette. If you’re going to have it in your hands all-day-long, you might find a 10ml bottle only lasts you one or two days.

Do I need to buy e-cigarette accessories?

All you need to start vaping is a working e-cigarette loaded with e-juice – but you might not be content with this forever. Luckily, there are plenty of e-cigarette accessories you can purchase to enhance or alter your vaping experience.

What is a ‘cigalike’?

A cigalike (cigarette-like) is, as the name implies, an e-cigarette designed to mimic the look and feel of a traditional tailored tobacco cigarette. They are generally smaller (as close to the size of a regular cigarette as possible) and are painted to appear to be a normal cigarette from afar. Some even have red tips that light up in order to look as if there is something really burning when you draw from the device.

What is the difference between manual and automatic e-cigarette batteries?

One of the base elements of an e-cigarette is the battery which powers the heating device that converts the e-liquid into the vapor you enjoy. These batteries come in lots of different shapes, with some being cylindrical and connect to the cartridge via a metal thread. They are either rechargeable or disposable.

There are two varieties of e-cigarette battery, manual and automatic:

Manual

Manual e-cigarette batteries work by the user pressing down on a button as they draw from the device in order to power the e-juice heating process. While some users find a manual battery to be fiddlier and more cumbersome, they are known to be generally more reliable, are better sealed against leaking and give you more control over the amount of vapor you create.

Automatic

An automatic e-cigarette battery uses an air pressure switch that is activated via suction when the user draws from the device. When you draw, it creates a vacuum that activates the battery, activating the heating element and delivering vapor to you. When the user stops drawing, the battery turns off and the heating process stops.

Generally, new users prefer automatic batteries because they are more effortless to use and more closely replicate the experience of a real cigarette. One downside is that, because this type of system can’t be fully sealed, it is more prone to damage from the e-liquid leaking out of its cartridge.
